Homunculus (ho-mun-cu-lus)

homunculus [huh-muhng-kyuh-luhs] - noun, plural

TheMotor and Sensory Homunculus

The homunculus is a figurative representation of the body map encoded in primary motor and sensory brain areas. Body parts with complex repertories of fine movement and heightened sensation, like the hand, foot and mouth / tongue, require more cortical space and representation in the brain, while body parts with relatively simpler movements and reduced sensory importance, like the hip and elbow require less cortical (motor and sensory) brain space or representation. Above are figurines that are proportionately shown to respresent these heightened areas of brain representation. It would make good clinical sense that treatment to these areas would have the highest impact on brain sensory and motor function.

Yes, we are now official geeks on the internet ! We are blogging, e-newsletter-ing, filming DVD's and now, podcasting !

The Podcast idea happened in early 2008 after some very interesting phone calls between Dr. Ivo and myself. On more than one occasion we remarked that we needed to record these great discussions to share them with the world. On one particular occasion we were on a rant over another bad shoe choice for one of our patients remarking that no one really knows about shoes anymore, certainly not many of the shoe stores that was for sure. So, we decided to embark on a journey to learn more programming and software skills as well as delve into the world of digital information procurement. We hope you enjoy the fruits of our labours.

(On a side note, this same idea was what spawned our most recent venture into the world of digital information. A 3-set DVD educational series on current treatment and training concepts which quickly resulted in a second 3-set DVD series in current production, as well as the highly anticipated "Professional Shoe DVD: Knowing what to choose for your foot and why". This shoe DVD will be available in the early 2009 new year.)
